Certainly there are other physician-artists, but I have a somewhat unusual situation in that I actively work in the visual world not only as a painter but also as a diagnostic radiologist. My artwork is naturally informed by my experiences of daily examination of the human body through medical imaging. My work as a radiologist involves paying attention to numerous subtle details while keeping in mind the overall pathologic process; I find creating art is similar in that you are continually consciously and unconsciously responding to mark making and adjusting small facets, while keeping in mind the piece as a whole. From a young age, I had deep interest in art, science, and the intersection between the two. I have been fortunate to be able to continue making art throughout my medical education and into practice. I was born and raised in the Midwest and received my BA in Studio Art at Wake Forest University. I have since lived in Houston, New Orleans, and most recently, Seattle. While I have been influenced by human anatomy, medical imagery, and nature in general to a considerable degree, many of my more recent works have drawn on abstract expressionism. I am interested in conveying movement and emotion using often heavily textured application of acrylic on canvas. Hopefully you also see something visually exciting in my paintings. Thank you for checking out my work.
